Barn Conversion

The challenge here was to make a feature out of a sloped bank bordering the driveway to a beautiful barn conversion. The clients stipulated that the planting design should be low maintenance yet visually striking.

The clients were unsure of the aesthetic they wanted to achieve so I sketched up examples of different planting styles ranging from Mediterranean to modern to a white border. We settled on a vibrant theme incorporating reds and acid lime-greens.

I added a sleeper retaining wall to bring the soil slope up to a workable angle. To keep the border, low maintenance I worked with a limited palette of hardy species. Finally a drip hose was added to the border buried under bark chippings. The existing yew hedge at the top of the slope worked as a beautiful background to show off the Stipa, Cornus and Euphorbias. The clients are delighted with the results.
